Making Bath Time Fun

dog bath
When it comes to bathing your dog, it can either be an exciting and fun event or a stressful and chaotic one. Some dogs really struggle in the tub. They react nervously or lash out in anger. Either way, it’s important to help your dog feel comfortable so you can give him a good scrubbing. Here are a few tips for you to try the next time your dog walks in your house with mud on his paws:

Ease into it: Sometimes your dog reacts negatively in the bathtub because something scares him. If you take it slow, you can figure out what exactly is the problem and then you’ll have a better chance of fixing it.

Make him comfortable: Let your dog play with his favorite toy or chew on a sanitized bone while he’s in the tub. That will help him feel more relaxed and docile.

Watering him down: If your dog is especially uncomfortable when you bathe him, try putting him in the tub with lukewarm water already in it. Let him get used to it a few times and then work your way up to pouring water on him with a cup. If that goes well, you can move on to a washcloth, a hose, or whatever you prefer.

Drying your dog: When your dog is nice and clean, dry him with a soft towel starting from the rear and moving up to the face. Praise your dog while you are doing so to help him feel more comfortable.

Ask a professional: If nothing seems to work, it might be helpful to ask your veterinarian what he recommends.

It may take a while to help your dog feel fully comfortable in the tub, but if you’re patient and willing to put forth the effort, bath time can become an easy and fun activity.

Top Puppy Names

Monday, March 4th, 2013

More than 1.26 million puppies were born in 2012, but what were the year’s top pet names. We took a look and found a few interesting trends that have continued on from last year and a couple of new trends as well.

Pop Culture has always played a big role in pet names and this year is no exception when it comes to the girls. The number one name for female pets is the same as it’s been since 2006, Bella.  Think it’s a coincidence that the first Twilight  book was released in October 2005? We don’t thinkg so either. How Cats Show Their Love

Thursday, February 14th, 2013

We know how much you love your pets, but have you ever noticed the little signs they give to show how much they love you back.  Cats are very affectionate and show their love in many ways so we’ve decided to list five ways that your cat shows it’s love for you.

Rubbing against you

Did you know that cats have glands that secrete oils, so that when they rub against you it smells familiar?  Pretty cool stuff, right?  The glands are for the most part on their heads and that’s why they rub up against all your furniture.  When your cat rubs against you with it’s head, it’s not just putting their scent on you.  It’s a way for your cat to claim you as their own.  So your cat rubbing against is just their way of saying, will you be mine? Pet’s First Aid Kit

Friday, February 8th, 2013

We all have a first aid kit in our home in case we have an accident, but what if your pet has an accident.  Do you have a pet first aid kit?  What should you have in your pet first aid kit?  These are just a few of the questions many people have so we have put together a list of things to include in your pet first aid kit.  Because pets can have accidents too.

You’ll probably want to put this all together in a fairly good sized box with a lid.  Also designate a spot in your home that is only for your pet’s first aid kit.

Dog Drivers

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

In New Zealand, three dogs learned how to drive cars.  Yep, you heard us right dogs learned to drive cars.

We know that this sounds like a practical joke, but it’s not it’s real. They are not just sitting in the cars looking like they are driving, they’re really operating them.  They started them out with specially modified training cars and then they moved them up to Mini Coopers.

Their feet work the gas and brake, their paws handle the steering wheel and shifter, while their eyes are on the road.

Researchers taught the dogs to drive because, well, how could you not? They also wanted to show how intelligent dogs can really be.

First they put the dogs through driving school in specially modified wooden training cars for eight weeks, then they tested the dogs in modified Minis.

“We train the dogs to do different actions,” said Mark Vette, the animal trainer who is teaching the dogs. “Touch is the first thing and then we teach them to touch the different objects with the right paw and left paw.

“They’ve all come through at this point and they’re all going really well.”

The point is to get people to adopt more shelter dogs. SPCA Auckland Chief Executive Christine Kalin said, “Sometimes, people think because they’re getting an animal that’s been abandoned that somehow it’s a second-class animal.”

The driving dogs, all rescues, are Porter, a 10-month-old Beardie Cross; Monty, an 18-month-old Schnauzer Cross; and Ginny, a 1-year-old Beardie Whippet Cross.

It’s truly amazing that dogs were trained in just eight weeks to drive cars!  No wonder they’re called man’s best friend, pretty soon they’ll be carpooling with us to work.  Check out the video here!

What are some amazing things you’ve trained your pets to do?
